Case Study:
Evaluation and Recommendations for the Reduction of Domestic Abuse

Bradford was recording high levels of repeat victimisation for domestic abuse. Partners were committed to improving their response and addressing the issue of high caseloads in their MARACs (Multi-agency Risk Assessment Conference).

Since the set-up of the MARAC, further effective practice had been developed by Safe Lives, the UK-wide charity dedicated to ending domestic abuse. MARAC partners wanted to ensure they were looking at opportunities to incorporate any new ideas into their delivery.

Client

A review for Bradford Council, which included all partners working around domestic abuse.

The solution

I undertook a review of the MARAC structure and process and made recommendations for improvement. This support included:

  • consultation with service users and organizations
  • review of national and regional effective practice
  • scrutiny of current focus, structures, processes, partnership engagement, and effectiveness in meeting aims and outcomes
  • statistical review of targets and outcome data of MARAC cases with comparison to those achieved elsewhere
  • examination of additional outcomes as a result of MARAC— opportunities to impact on children and perpetrators.

The Outcome

Bradford had a report providing a comprehensive reevaluation of the service. In addition, follow-on mentoring support enabled the development of an action plan.

I have also undertaken a similar review process for Wakefield Council which strengthened partnership working, improved triage processes and supported the development of domestic abuse perpetrator services.
