Aiming to improve the available drug treatment in prison settings, partners identified the need for support to enable the smooth, clinically safe and efficient mobilisation of the new treatment. Programme management was sought to lead the design, develop and mobilise the new treatment service.
The Client
I worked with a voluntary, private and public sector partnership, which included a large Category C prison, the social enterprise Spectrum Community Health CIC and a pharmaceutical company.
The Problem
The partners wanted to provide a new treatment option for opioid users in a secure environment, as prison provides an opportunity for offenders to address their substance misuse issues. The partnership needed to establish a system to implement the new formulation of an evidence-based drug treatment, and the project encompassed the associated medical and psychosocial standard operating procedures, guidelines and training, as well as staff and lived experience communications.
I provided skilled leadership to design and develop the service in a number of areas:
- development of a range of operational procedures and documentation including standard operating procedures, operating plans and patient consent forms
- engagement of clinical, psychosocial, residential and commissioning teams
- co-ordination of the delivery of training across staff disciplines, designed to ensure clear communication and the ability to initiate treatment
- project management support and tools to enable future roll out
The Outcome
Over seventy staff were trained, the clinical pathway and the treatment clinic were established and implemented. Patients are now receiving the new drug treatment. Systems and procedures have been established which provide a template for the roll out to further secure estates.
